Born and raised in the Netherlands, Bergen op Zoom, I have been active as an artist since 2012. I draw and paint portraits of both people and animals.
In my free work, I mainly paint portraits and still lifes. For a still life, I use objects that appeal to me in terms of shape, color, and texture. In addition to painting, I also sculpt.
I prefer to paint objects that are always present in everyday life. The elements that fascinate me in a painting are color, the fall of light, and texture. I try to paint a realistic still life, but I am not a true fine-detail painter. I aim to achieve realism more through my own technique. Brushwork therefore plays a major role in my still lifes.
Compositions often emerge while I arrange the objects on a table, but sometimes a specific image already comes to mind beforehand. Usually, it is not my goal to give symbolic meaning to a still life, but unconsciously references do occasionally appear.
The beauty of light lies in creating depth, so my search for this is a challenge with every painting. I am self-taught and have developed my own technique. In most cases, I try to use a single light source that falls onto the objects. This creates a certain contrast that I like to pursue.
The objects I paint can vary; it often depends on how the object appears in contrast. Personally, I like to give some objects a bit more light emerging from the darkness, viewed from a contrast perspective.
Through testing and experimentation, I have developed my own technique, which I have continued to refine and expand over the years. By learning from fellow artists and from art books, I continue to learn every day.
